TMJ

TMJ & TMD

TMJ is a short form of Temporomandibular Joint. This joint connects the lower jawbone to the skull. This joint lets the lower jawbone move.

TMD is Temporomandibular Disorder, which occurs due to the injury on the joint or around it. And this cause mild to severe pain in the TMJ. But there are other causes that can lead to TMD, like teeth grinding or clenching, trauma etc.

Diagnosis 

  • X-ray
  • CT Scan
  • MRI

Treatment

Treatment available depending on the condition.

  • Natural: Using ice, eating soft food, lowering stress etc.
  • Medication: Ask surgeons for the medicine.
  • Surgery is available depending on the condition.


OHIP only covers dental surgeries that take place in a hospital. TMJ treatment is usually done in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Offices. So it is not covered by OHIP. If you have an Extended Health Care plan that covers out-patient facility services then the plan will cover the TMJ treatment.
