ABOUT OUR SPECIALTY

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is a specialty within dentistry and the profession is regulated by the RCDSO Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario. The oral and maxillofacial scope of practice includes a number of procedures and services not limited to Oral Cancer Treatment. For example, TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) Disorders, Dental Implants, Wisdom Teeth Management, Dry Socket and many other conditions include cleft palate correction. In addition, Ontario Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (OSOMS) provide a wide range of cosmetic oral surgeries, for example, corrective jaw surgery and help with sleep apnea. Please be aware that currently, 90% of the surgeries are not covered by any type of Insurance Plan and not by OHIP.

CANCER TREATMENT

Cancer treatment, especially on the head and neck involving radiation or chemotherapy can have a negative effect on normal oral health in both the short-term and long-term. Therefore, in consideration for routine dental care, the specialist should be aware of the potential complications that may be present. Further, in the dental treatment of cancer patients, ensuring that the oral health of the patient is in good standing in order to prevent oral disease spreading or osteonecrosis of the jaw is paramount in care.

DENTAL IMPLANT

A dental implant is a replacement for the root of your tooth and it can be used to replace single missing teeth; stabilize dentures; or they can replace an entire arch of teeth. Placement of the actual implant is a minor surgical procedure that can be done in an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons’ clinic under either sedation or local anesthesia (freezing).

DRY SOCKET

A dry socket is a swelling of the bone, resulting from the recent extraction of loss of a tooth. Most commonly, dry socket occurs as a complication of wisdom tooth (third molar) removal, however it can also occur as a complication of routine tooth extraction as well.

WISDOM TEETH MANAGEMENT

Impacted wisdom teeth is a disorder where the third molars (wisdom teeth) are prevented from erupting by a physical barrier, usually other teeth. If the wisdom teeth do not have an open connection to the mouth, pain can develop with the onset of inflammation or infection or damage to the adjacent teeth.

WIRED SHUT

Maxillomandibular fixation (or MMF) is used by Oral & Maxillofacial surgeons to stabilize the lower jaw, by securing it to the upper jaw.  Thin wires are placed around each tooth, and brace-bars (called Erich arch bars) with small hooks are first secured to the teeth in the upper jaw, and then the lower jaw.  Those brace-bars are then secured top to bottom with 4-5 wire loops to stabilize the lower jaw.  Alternatively, just wires are used sometimes (called Ivy loops), or bone screws (called MMF screws) depending on where stabilization is needed.

MRONJ

MRONJ is caused by either antiresorptive drugs (including bisphosphonates) that cause a reduced ability for the reabsorption of bone, or antiangiogenic drugs, which impair the formation of new blood vessels. While uncommon, MRONJ is a serious side effect of these drugs, and extra awareness should be used when treating patients with these conditions.

TMJ

TMJ is a short form of Temporomandibular Joint. This joint connects the lower jawbone to the skull. This joint lets the lower jawbone move.

TMD is Temporomandibular Disorder, which occurs due to the injury on the joint or around it. And this cause mild to severe pain in the TMJ. But there are other causes that can lead to TMD, like teeth grinding or clenching, trauma etc.
