Dr. Glen Donnarumma, DDS

Anesthesia-Related Case Studies: Reducing Risk and Improving Outcomes

Session Description:

In this course, OMSNIC closed claims will be examined to identify patient safety and risk management considerations in the administration of in-office anesthesia to help OMS reduce adverse events and strengthen clinical decision-making.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Assess patient candidacy for in-office anesthesia through evaluation of age, ASA physical status classification, airway assessment, and relevant medical, dental, and pharmacologic histories.
  • Describe essential elements of emergency preparedness for the OMS practice, including team training, protocol development, and response planning for anesthesia-related complications.
  • Implement patient safety and risk management strategies related to anesthesia delivery, including appropriate equipment utilization, monitoring, and comprehensive documentation of the perioperative patient experience.


Speaker Bio:

Dr. Donnarumma earned his dental degree and specialty training in OMS from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He has been active in organized dentistry serving as a delegate from New York State in the AAOMS House of Delegates and as a delegate in the American Dental Association. Dr. Donnarumma is a member of the OMSNIC Patient Safety and Risk Management Committee. Dr. Donnarumma has nothing to disclose. 


Dr. Kevin Mccann

To Have Or To Hold:  Perioperative Management  of Patient Medications

Session Description: 

The aim of the presentation is to discuss the safe management of patient medications prior to receiving local, sedation, or general anesthesia in the outpatient environment.


Speaker Bio:

Dr. McCann completed an undergraduate degree in physiology and psychology at Western University in 1981, followed by his DDS at the same institution in 1985.  After serving as a Dental Officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, he completed his OMFS Residency at the University of Toronto in 1993.  In 2007, he successfully completed the requirements for Diplomate status in the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology.  He has been in solo practice in Kitchener-Waterloo since 1994, and maintains hospital privileges at what is know called the Waterloo Regional Health Network.


Dr. McCann has been active in the OMFS community as the Membership Chairman and in all line officer positions of the CAOMS.  He completed his final term as Past President in 2021.  Along with Dr. David Walker, he has been instrumental in coordinating the activities of the Canadian Dental Society of Anesthesiology.
