Lecture Description

Fibro-osseous lesions of the jaws are a diverse group of disorders that are commonly encountered by oral and maxillofacial surgeons.  Although these lesions often share overlapping clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic features, their biologic behaviour, molecular drivers, and surgical management differ significantly. Accurate diagnosis requires careful integration of clinical presentation, imaging findings, histopathology, and, increasingly, molecular pathology.  This presentation will provide a practical review of the contemporary classification of fibro-osseous lesions of the jaws, and provide insights on how pathology and molecular findings may influence surgical decision-making.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lecture, participants will be able to:

1. Review the current classification and pathology of fibro-osseous lesions of the jaws, and
2. Understand how molecular pathology complements traditional diagnostic approaches.

Bio

Dr. Iona Leong is a specialist in oral medicine and oral pathology and is an associate professor at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto.  She teaches undergraduate and graduate dental specialty students and medical residents. She is head of the Division of Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine in the Department of Dentistry, Mount Sinai Hospital.  She is also an associate staff pathologist in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Mount Sinai Hospital and the Department of Pathobiology and Laboratory Medicine, University of Toronto.
