Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons constitute one of nine specializations within the dentistry profession recognized by the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Canada.
And by equivalent bodies in other jurisdictions. In Ontario, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are regulated as a specialization by the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO). In 2010, 201 Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons were registered to practise in the Province. Most Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons practise in both public hospitals and private dental clinics.
In order to be registered within the specialization, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons must successfully complete at least four years of clinical and didactic education and at least one year's residency in a hospital or equivalent institution. These requirements are in addition to the baccalaureate degree and the four years of postgraduate training necessary to be registered as a general practice dentist. The average post-secondary education for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in Ontario is 12-14 years. In addition, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons must successfully complete specialty examinations (in Canada FRCDC (C) (OMS)). Most of Ontario's Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons have also completed the US Board Certified examinations for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
As part of their education, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons complete formal rotations including clinical and didactic education relating to radiographs, including Computed Tomography (i.e. dental CT scans).
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are the only dental specialists in Ontario whose education and competencies have been recognized as warranting admitting privileges to hospitals. In the hospital environment, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are authorized to order and read full medical-grade CT scans.
