Profession of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (OMFS) are specialists within the dentistry profession in Ontario. As such, they are regulated under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 and the Dentistry Act, 1991 by the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO).
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery involves the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, disorders and dysfunctions of the oral-facial complex, namely the anatomical area of the mouth, jaws, face, skull and associated structures. OMFS perform complex procedures such as the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant pathologies, congenital cranial facial malformations, chronic facial pain disorders, reconstructive surgery to correct facial asymmetry and deformity, incorrect bite, soft and hard tissue trauma, the surgical treatment of sleep apnea, performing dental implants, extractions and a range of reconstructive procedures.
